Mount Best – a diverse history

One of the most expansive views in South Gippsland can be gained from the top of Mount Best at the lookout. Corner inlet, Wilsons Promontory and valley views can be seen for 360 degrees.

Some days the wind is so strong that it is a challenge to get your car door open. But the struggle is well worth it.

You will find a rock memorial at the top of the hill detailing a local tragedy in the early 1900′s, where several people were caught in bushfires and lost their lives.

In winter 2005 it snowed in many areas and a few flakes were seen in Foster township itself, but the hills surrounding Mount Best attracted a flurry of interested local tourists. Some had never even ventured up the mountain before.

Below are some photographs taken from my garden, 1 km from the top. I have since sold that property to some keen gardening enthusiasts, but I am ever so grateful to have experienced this white wonderland for several days over that winter.
